Finding good childcare can be a challenge ~ here is a list of local Childcare providers as well as services and programs for preschoolers. This is our own list, and we try to keep it up-to-date, but your best bet is to contact the preschools directly for more info.

A parent run cooperative preschool for 3 and 4 year olds. The teaching philosophy is learning through play. Parents take an active role in the classroom under the direction of a qualified Early Education Educator (E.C.E.) We’ve introduced a variety of participation options to create a more inclusive preschool community. Families can choose from three different options to suit their needs, availability and interests.
Preschool program is available for 2 – 4 mornings a week, 9am to 1pm, Monday to Thursday, September to June.
After Preschool Care is available 2 afternoons a week, 1pm to 3pm, Mondays and Wednesdays, September to June.
We also now offer a summer camp for children age 3 -5 years.
Tree Frog Daycare is a licensed non profit society with programs for children from newborn until they begin kindergarten. The daycare offers full-time and part-time spaces including afternoon kindergarten care and pick up from Fulford Elementary School. Early Childhood Educators (ECE) and assistants provide care and programming in separate infant-toddler and pre-school programs. The daycare is open year round with the exception of statutory holidays and Christmas break. Child Care subsidies are available.

Salt Spring Early Learning Centre (formerly Salt Spring Island Daycare)
The Salt Spring Island Daycare Society is a non profit, charitable organization providing island families with quality and affordable daycare for 25 years. The Daycare offers a flexible program with a combination of full time and part time spaces for children aged 2-1/2 to 5 years. Half day kindergarten care is available. The Daycare’s program encourages social, physical, cognitive and creative skills through a variety of group and individual activities. A fully qualified Early Childhood Educator is on duty at all times. The daycare is open year round with the exception of statutory holidays and Christmas break. Childcare subsidies are available.

A safe, healthy and fun home environment for 1-5 year olds, where preschool learning is incorporated into play. Located close to Vesuvius.
A licensed facility offering a preschool type program for 2-6 year olds. Directed by a qualified Montessori teacher, situated on 15 acres, 8 km. from town, with a child-centered learning approach. Topham Family Childcare
Licensed Family Child Care with experienced staff who offer children a wide diversity of experience. Conveniently located at the start of Long Harbour Road close to Ganges. Situated on a large property with trails, a goldfish pond, free range chickens and access to a nearby creek. After school care spaces are available, located on school bus route.
Little Blue Early Learning Centre
Little Blue is licensed by Vancouver Island Health Authority (Community Care Licensing branch) as a Multi-age Centre (2 – 5) and as an Infant/ Toddler centre (under 3 years old). Little Blue is a privatively owned and operated by Stephanie Prince Ryan.

Other Preschool Centres, Resources
Family Place, located behind the Community Centre, and operated by SSI Community Services is a family focused drop-in and resource centre, offering a range of supports and services for families with children under six, and community development activities to increase community capacity to support young families. Services to families and children include drop-in parent/child services, structured parenting and play programs and individual parent support. Family Place provides a “hub” for early childhood services on Salt Spring.
The center is open Monday to Wednesday, 9:30 a.m. to noon as an informal meeting place and play area. A regular schedule of educational workshops and special events is locally advertised. Private counseling and home visits by appointment. Phone 537-9176.
Toy Library: Salt Spring Island families may borrow toys and books for children ages 0-6. Service is available at Family Place during drop-in hours. Two toys per family may be borrowed for up to one month.
E.L.F. (Early Learning for Families, Strong Start Centres)
This program is operated by School District 64 at two sites on Salt Spring Island – Fulford Elementary School and Salt Spring Elementary School. It runs on a drop-in basis and is a parent participatory program designed for children ages 0 to 5. The program operates Monday to Thursday from 8:30am to 11:30am with occasional evening events.

Toddler Time / Story Time at the Library
Toddler Time – Tuesdays at 2:00 pm. Runs all year. Families with toddlers are welcome to drop in.
Story Time – Fridays at 10:30 am. No sessions are held during the summer. For families with children under the age of 10.
Special Needs Child Support
Child Support services are available to assist with the care, supervision and support of children with mental challenges. Services include specialized and individualized child care interventions, respite, and other supports to families with children eligible for service from CLBC.
